It may be cliche, but pregnancy is very exciting. Last week a dear friend (one of the first people I left my baby with for any length of time) invited me into her nursery to take some photos as she prepares to welcome a new family member.

I know that E will make an awesome big sister.

I suspect she will be much more interested in conversing with him when he has arrived in person.

Of course, Dad already has the little guys NFL preferences planned out. I would rather see some blue and black ... but it isn't my place to make those decisions for other people's kids '-P

And Mom has been reading him stories.

All in all - we can't wait to meet the little guy.

One of the things I love about both of my jobs is that I get to spend time with really fun and interesting people, Jon and Doleen are a prime example of that. I don't remember when I first met them, but for as long as I can remember they have been the sort of customers I am thankful for every time they walk in the door, thankful for their sweetness and appreciative for how much their love reminds me of my Grandparents - in fact at my other job they are best known and Gram & Gramps, bringer of amazing baked goods.

Since he is a veteran, we paused a moment in front of the navy seal. I love that he wore boots instead of ordinary shoes.

Jon has jokes and anytime he wasn't looking adoringly at his wife, he was teasing her to make her laugh.

Or threatening to jump fences ...

All in all, it was a lovely afternoon.

I hate cilantro. I am not entirely convinced that I have the gene that makes it taste like soap - we just don't get along. However while I was pregnant it didn't bother me - and let me tell you, these tacos were high on my favorite foods list.

Spending a long time not feeling up to doing much more than collapsing on the couch at every opportunity and the subsequent break down in my typical posting patterns has led to some introspection and nostalgia.

While I don't really miss being a student per say (if only because some of my favorite things in life now are things that wouldn't have fit well into the things I loved about university) I do miss the push and drive and creative flow that my art classes led to. I miss being practically forced to pull all nighters playing with studio lighting and friends. I miss creeping back into them in the breaking dawn to photograph candy. The list could go on and on, but the thing about school is that it is never supposed to be a purpose in and of itself - it was supposed to be equipping.

For a while I remembered that and I used it, but I have gotten away from that. I have gotten away from the push and drive to create and to make (not just with photography but also with food and textiles as well) and I don't like that. I have been at a loss for how to reclaim it. Life presses in and excuses flow like wine at an ancient harvest festival (not that I am all that familiar with such shenanigans).

Lacking great new ideas I have decided that at least for today I will go back to an old idea that served me well - the hours project. The bulk of my favorite post-grad work was born out of this project so it seems like a good place to start. I need structure, I need rules (even when they are just manufactured). Maybe this is a lack of maturity or artistic genius - but I can't bring myself to care overmuch, I am at a point where I would rather do something foolish to fix a problem than ride to momentum train to nowhereland.

All of that being said - I started today. I don't know if I will be doing it everyday but I am doing it today and I am committing to posting one day of hours every week through March 23rd.

When I was in high school and dragging my feet about complying with the requests (or outright demands) my Grandfather would sometimes make I would take a "football minute" to get to it. Everyone knows a minute in football could very well take what feels like hours so I thought it was the perfect solution (although my Grandfather never did buy it)

Well it has been a week of football minutes, and getting sick again (3 consecutive opens is never great - 4a is just not the right time to be waking up) but here at last is a photo and a few links to some of the cool things I read this morning as I was catching up on my interwebbing.

As I get older I am starting to collect all the recipes that I love from my families ... thankfully a huge chunk of that work was down by one of my grandmothers who made a family cookbook about a decade ago - so now it remains to piece together the other side - which I did a bit of over the holidays. If you ever want something delightful make these and let them sit for a day.

Many recipes are treasured and revered in my family, but one of the all time tops is the family spaghetti recipe. It entered our family when a customer at my Great-grandmother Mary Lou's diner. The story is that he was one of her regulars and thought she needed to have an authentic Italian spaghetti recipe, so he gave Mary Lou his own Mother's recipe (shocking the wife who herself had not received it) on the condition that she keep its secret. She told no one but her own daughter who in turn kept the secret until her children were adults when she gave it to them. The recipe stayed tucked away unobtrusively until it made its official debut in the family cookbooks she compiled. Every time I make it I feel close to her, so I wanted to share the experience as my Christmas present to whomever cares to have it. Enjoy the unfolding.
